Canon, a leader in digital imaging solutions, has added a couple of new RF mount lenses to its lineup of RF full-frame mirrorless lenses. The company announced the new RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM and RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM. Canon said that its latest lens announcements will further buttress its commitment to its full-frame mirrorless camera system.
As the specs sheets show, both lenses feature image stabilization (IS), constant f/2.8 apertures, and Nano USM. These new RF Mount lenses promise to deliver optimum optical performance to both professional and advanced amateur photographers given their large, bright f/2.8 aperture, image stabilization (IS), and a zoom range that covers a wide range of shooting scenes.
Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon announced the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM – which is its first f/2.8 wide zoom lens to come with image stabilization (IS). The ultra-wide focal range of the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM supports a broader photographic expression that lays more emphasis on perspective. It features up to five stops of CIPA standard image stabilization.
The new lens promises to deliver impressive edge-to-edge sharpness throughout the zoom range (by virtue of the shorter back focus and large-diameter mount of the EOS R system) to shoot clear photos with high quality from the center of the image throughout the entire focal range. There’s a new control ring too, and the lens design makes it moisture and dust resistant.
Commenting on EF lenses, Canon said that despite featuring a wider field of view, image stabilization, and the RF system’s new control ring, the new RF 15-35mm f/2.8 will be similar in size to the EF 17-35mm f/2.8 DSLR lens. It will be very interesting to see how the new RF lens compares to Canon’s DSLR version, given that the RF lens does offer a wider max field of view.
The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens will be available in stores this September with a suggested retail price tag of $2,299 USD.
Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM
Canon also announced the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM which offers both pro-level performance and portability. The new RF lens is about the same size as the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II but offers image stabilization.

It further incorporates a high-speed and high-precision Nano USM motor which allows for accurate and quiet autofocus for capturing both stills and video. And just like the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM, it features up to five stops of image stabilization.
The lens has a customizable control ring that you can assign either the control of the shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, or ISO. The lens design suppresses focus breathing when recording video and allows users to adjust the focus ring sensitivity when using manual focusing. It also features focus ring usage adjustments.
The RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens will be available starting in late September 2019 with a suggested retail price of $2,299 USD.
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is Incoming
Canon plans “to complete the trinity” of fast constant f/2.8 aperture zoom RF Mount lenses by releasing the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens. The company has also revealed that the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens is scheduled to begin shipping late 2019.
Free Firmware Update
Furthermore, Canon has announced that a new free downloadable firmware update for EOS R and EOS RP cameras is scheduled for release in late September this year. The new firmware update aims to add eye detection autofocus when shooting a distant subject, improve overall AF frame tracking for moving subjects, and enhance subject identification and distant tracking performance on EOS R and EOS RP cameras.
