Holy Stone is known for producing cost-effective drones that pack a lot of facilities. Now they have produced a top of the range drone in the form of the Holy Stone HS700 FPV or otherwise known as the Holy Stone HS700 Ophelia drone. Although it’s their top drone, it’s still very affordable and comes with a decent amount of features to attract both the beginner and the experienced pilots.
In this review, we will dig into what the drone is and see exactly how it measures up to the competition.
Firstly, the Holy Stone HS700 FPV comes with everything you need to get started. Included is the drone itself, the remote control, a rather chunky, replaceable battery, as well as a battery and USB charger, a few tools, propellers, and smartphone mount.
As for the drone design itself, it has the look and feel of the DJI Phantom. A pretty substantial unit that is capable of handling a variety of weather conditions. The Holy Stone drone weighs in at 608g, which means you will have to register with the FAA.
A heavy drone means more substantial brushless motors are used. This doesn’t just give the drone more power, but also longer flight times which is a win all around for the consumer.
A substantial battery which is provided in the form of a 2800mAh unit and can give around 20 minutes of flight time. Much more than cheaper units in the range. Being such a large battery, the charge time is quoted at five to seven hours, which means it’s advisable to buy a few extra batteries to extend the flight time. The propellers also have a quick release for easier swapping out.
Being the flagship drone from the company, you would expect a lot of built-in flight features. The drone doesn’t disappoint with built-in GPS/ GLONASS mode, for better communication.
There are beginner friendly modes which can limit the range to 50m and an altitude of 30m, along with a bunch of flight modes. Included are custom flight paths that you can use with the included smartphone app, GPS Follow Me to follow the pilot, auto return, and Points of Interest which will circle around a location on the ground.
There’s also an included 1080p camera which attaches underneath the drone which can transmit up to 1300ft with the total control range of the drone being 3280ft. The camera attaches underneath the drone solidly, which means it doesn’t have any axis adjustment for smoother footage.
The remote control has a simple layout with a 5GHz Live video transmission and includes an FPV mode. The control itself can be charged up independently with a built-in battery, which at least saves feeding it with AA batteries all the time like some other units. The included holder can be used for attaching a smartphone, which can handle most of the flight functionality and the FPV.
In total, the whole package feels like you’re getting a quality made drone that can handle a variety of weather conditions.
Holy Stone HS700 FPV in Use
If you’re checking out drones on this website, then you’re probably interested in what the camera can do along with its flight capabilities. The included camera is very GoPro-esque, which is rated at 1080p/60 FPS and can transmit on 5G. This definitely improves the feedback for first person view flight. Unfortunately, because the camera doesn’t have a gimbal, the footage can come out slightly shaky, but it’s of reasonable quality.
The camera also straps into the drone, which means it can be replaced by something similar like a GoPro HERO. Better quality footage, but some sort stabilization is also needed. Good thing the drone is a stable flyer, which helps with stable footage.
As for flying capabilities, the drone is simple to use and via the smartphone app, automatic flight features can be engaged with easy takeoff and landing. Once in the air, you can engage functions like Follow Me, which makes flying a breeze.
Custom flightpaths are easy to configure with just a few taps on the app. The other automatic flight features are also a great way to capture more interesting footage. This may be a heavy drone, but it also means it’s quite capable of taking a few gusts of wind and also feels substantial enough to take a few bumps.
How Does It Compare?
As we are looking at cost-effective drones, it’s useful to look at another offering from Holy Stone in the form of the Holy Stone HS100 FPV RC. It’s not going to pack in as many features as a flagship unit, but it’s also more reasonably priced. The HS100 shares a similar design, a shorter flight time, and also less time to charge the batteries.
In many ways, the decision comes down to your budget and how many facilities you want on board. Luckily, the cheaper end of the market is packing in loads of goodies which only recently were the realm of only the top end units.
In other words, for just a few hundred dollars, you’re going to get a very capable flyer but you also have to factor in that you will only get a certain level of quality with the included camera at this price point. In other words, for the best quality video, a higher spec camera would be needed.
|Holy Stone HS700 FPV||Holy Stone HS100 FPV RC|
|Charge Time||5-7 hours||3-6 hours|
|Flight Time||16-20 mins||12-15 mins|
The Holy Stone HS700 FPV is a very capable drone, which is made to a high-quality. The video footage is sharp and although there isn’t an included gimbal, the footage comes out reasonably sharp and of good quality.
Upgrading the camera to a GoPro unit with built-in image stabilization is an extra cost, but will give you better footage. The drone can also hit a reasonable speed of 60 k/mh downwind and 25 km/h upwind if it needs to.
With all the included flight features the Holy Stone HS700 FPV is very capable and has enough built-in features to appeal to both the beginner and more advanced pilot. Considering all the other features on this drone it would’ve been nice to include an avoidance detection system, but I guess at this price point you can’t have everything.
In conclusion, considering the price, this is a very capable drone that packs in a lot of functionality. There are some caveats such as the lack of a camera gimbal, but generally, it stands up as Holy Stone’s flagship model with a lot of fun for the money.
