Opened My Eyes

Prior to using the Fuji X100T (and its predecessor, the X100S) I was a staunch proponent of always shooting in RAW. I have been using my Nikon DSLR for all types of photography (family, portraits, events, wedding, landscapes) for about three years and never liked the quality of the JPGs no matter what tweaks were made with the camera settings. So, I would have to spend a lot more time in Lightroom every time I emptied my memory card for color correction, especially in mixed lighting situations. Then I rented this camera and decided to give the JPGs a shot since I had heard so many good things about Fuji's processing. For the first session I shot RAW+JPG just in case the JPGs really weren't great. I ended up using only the JPGs...I had to spend no time at all doing color correction. I was amazed and I can't tell you how great it was to cut my editing process time by almost 75%! The time I'm able to save on editing more than makes up for the the price of this camera...but there's more. The X100T is so silent which makes documentary photography, specifically during a wedding, so much easier. Whenever I would pull out my DSLR, people would see it, look, and then give that big smile completely breaking up the moment I was hoping to capture. With the X100T, the wedding guests hardly noticed me until well after I had already capture the moment I was hoping for, true candid moments. Finally, the ISO performance on the X100T is mind boggling. With my APS-C sensor Nikon I feel very comfortable shooting ISO 400, going to ISO 800 occasionally, and ISO 1600 only when it's an emergency. Above ISO 1600 the image quality is way too grainy for my tastes. However, with the X100T, which is an APS-C sized sensor, I had no reservations using ISO 1600 and 3200 occasionally. I don't know how Fuji has done it, but what they have done for ISO performance puts all other APS-C sized sensors to shame. I will also say the X100T is not perfect. First of all, obviously, you are limited to a fixed focal length. The battery life is rather pathetic especially if you use the LCD instead of the viewfinder, they should have tried to make a bit larger battery. The focus, while fast and accurate when your subjects are relatively still or only moving slightly, is not fast and accurate enough when it some to fast moving subjects, like kids running around during a wedding reception. I also ran into an issue with the default set up for using a memory card and not having the camera reset the image count. The image count on the photos got to 9999 and the camera started saying the memory card was full when it still had more than half its capacity left. It took me a minute to figure that I had to change the setting for it to reset the image count so I could take photos again. I really could go on and on about why I love this camera. Yes, it has some limitations, but as you learn to work with those limitations this camera quickly becomes such a joy to use.
