The Canon EOS M50 is a mid-range mirrorless device. It sits somewhere in-between the basic M100 and M200, and the higher quality M5. This mirrorless camera excels at both photography and video and has an impressive 24.1MP resolution. To aid the camera, there is also a great range of Canon M50 lenses for under $300.
The native Canon EF-M lens range is still relatively small, but Canon plans to add more lenses in the future. In addition to these official Canon lenses, you can purchase a small number of third-party products too.
If you own a Canon EOS M50, read on to find out the different Canon M50 lenses for under $300. Including several kit lenses and a few specialist models.
1. Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM (Overall Winner)
Our top choice in Canon M50 lenses for under $300 is the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. This is now the standard kit lens that comes with new Canon EOS M50 cameras. It offers great value as well as fantastic image quality.
We feel that the design is not as robust as the older 18-55mm, but it is still well made. There is a lock allowing you to keep your focal distance. In addition, it has the iconic textured design ring that all other official EF-M lenses have.
The focal distance of 15-45mm serves multiple purposes. You can use it for wide-angle photography and mid-range street photography too. This is benefited by the built-in image stabilization and STM motor.
This means that the lens can minimize hand shaking and has a virtually silent autofocus operation.
The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM is our favorite wide-angle lens for Canon mirrorless cameras. It is an amazing quality lens both in image and build quality.
The lens has a metal ring mount and despite its small size still feels robust and durable. In addition, it is tiny and weighs virtually nothing, making it easy to transport.
With a focal distance of 22mm, the EF-M 22m f/2 STM is brilliant for landscape photography and street photography. It has a decent minimum focusing distance so it can be used as a make-shift macro lens as well.
The wide maximum aperture means you can create some gorgeous bokeh effects. The downside to this lens is that it doesn’t have image stabilization. It does have the STM motor, however for silent autofocusing.
The Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is one of the few telephoto lenses available for the M50. Luckily, it is also the best!
This mid-range telephoto lens performs fantastically. It offers smooth performance with the STM motor, and the built-in image stabilization.
In addition, it is lightweight and small compared to traditional DSLR telephoto lenses. It does not take up much space and can be easily transported. If you want a telephoto lens for Canon EOS M50, this is currently the best option available.
As one of the best Canon M50 lenses for under $300, the Canon EF-M 18-55m f/4.5-6.3 IS STM used to be the main kit lens for the M-series cameras. This has since been replaced by the 15-45mm which takes our top spot.
Nonetheless, this is still one of the best lenses available. With a focal distance of 18-55mm, it makes an excellent general lens. You can use it for various purposes including wide-angle photography and portraits. We also like the consistent aperture range of f/3.5-5.6.
The lens looks fantastic and it has a stylish exterior textured grip. In addition, it also has built-in image stabilization and the silent STM motor. The image stabilization works up to four spots of shake correction.
As of yet, the EF-M range of lenses does not feature many specialist lenses. The Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is, therefore, a great choice and a brilliant specialist lens.
This macro lens has 1.2x magnification, and it is capable of infinite focus – something that is not readily available on macro lenses. Furthermore, it is currently the world’s lightest macro lens.
If you want to create stunning, close-detail macro shots with your EOS M50, this lens is the best choice available.
6. Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC (Budget Winner)
Tamron is one of the few third-party companies to produce lenses for the EOS M series. The Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC is a brilliant lens with a wide focal distance. From 18-200mm you can shoot anything from wide-angle, through to telephoto.
The large focal distance gives great flexibility which is complemented by high-quality lens elements and excellent design. The lens looks fantastic and has a textured grip on the outside which makes it easy to transition between different zoom levels.
In addition, it has Tamron’s patented vibration control technology. This means that your image will be in focus and have minimal motion blur. Finally, this lens has a great aperture range. At 18mm it has a maximum aperture of f/3.5. Whilst at 200mm, it has a maximum aperture of f/6.3.
